At least you're making an effort to improve your overall health - good on you. I'm glad you mentioned the body going into survival mode if you don't eat enough therefore storing more fat - that's why diets, per se, are generally not a good way of loosing weight permanently. Exercise and sensible eating - nor always so easy in our day and age - is the way to go. I'm thinking maybe you haven't been drinking enough (nonalcholic) fluid.

Great piece Steve - and thanks to Sam for running it on her blog. If you look on Wikipedia, in some of the articles on literary genre, the whole speculative fiction section has so many sub-sub categories that it makes those obscure Puritan Christian religious sects (that keep splitting away from each other over doctrinal dispute and creating even smaller sects) look positively rational and well balanced. Perhaps authors and publishers should worry less about the micro definition of their markets and focus more on the content they are delivering to their readers? CC

I'm very pleased to see that Amazon has taken this action. It is both unfair and illegal for Authorhouse to continue to profit from a book that was never theirs in the first place. Copyright has always been yours, Sam, both morally and legally. So this is certainly a positive step!

Have always admired Noel's work on tv. His contributions to the IT Crowd were highlights and I don't think I'd watch Buzzcocks without him. Nice to hear he is as nice in real life as he seems on screen. It isn't always the case and it is disappointing when that happens.

So lovely to see you in the piccies together :) You complement each other nicely - is there a Noel doll too as I think that would make a brilliant goth pairing?

It is also a principled choice and I believe it lifts you above the fray of speculation and innuendo. You will always be the winner in my appraisal. You won the awards, fair and square. They are an acknowledgment of your talent and efforts. I am saddened that there has been any controversy. That said, I respect your decision to return the award. It shows far more sensitivity to the profession and the field than your critics have shown.

There will be other awards, and you and your fans will know that you did, in truth, win this one, despite what the record books will show.

Sam, do please reconsider your decision to return the August Derleth Award. You won this award fairly and it should be your moment; I am both shocked and saddened that an author, who is quite clearly talented and works hard for her art, has to face such controversy.

Sam, these are wise words indeed.
Unless an author is with a big publishing house with a megabuck budget, today we have to work hard at promoting our work. Very hard. In a crowded market, especially since the explosion of self published work, how else can potential readers know your book exists?
The trick is how to self promote without the counter productive effect of being a pain in the neck!
The author must guage their target readership and court them with style, grace and respect.
Something you are a genius at achieving, Sam.
